Getting to Know Carol Ann Dykes
COO, UCF Technology Incubator
What individuals have influenced you most and how?
One is my father. It was from him that I learned how important it is to value every person who crosses your path. I learned patience, optimism, the value of hard work and always doing your best, and that giving to others is what brings life’s greatest rewards. My Grandmother would be another person who still influences me greatly. From her I learned the importance of the “clan”…the family is a family no matter how far and wide they roam or what they do. I learned the importance of being part of the church and the community.
What would surprise us to know about you?
I grew up on a farm where we raised cotton, soybeans, catfish, and hogs. I’ve done my turn at slopping hogs, feeding baby piglets and helping on the farm. I used to be a pretty good shot with a rifle.
What is your favorite food?
Perfectly ripe mangos or coconut ice cream.
What hidden talent do you have?
Well I do love to rock climb….real rocks up the sides of mountains. But since there is not much elevation in Florida, I rarely get to go. And I love to work with beads and embroidery to create beautiful things.
At what age did you trust Christ as your Savior?
Ten. I grew up in a very strong Methodist family with ministers, church organists, deacons, and Sunday School teachers for parents and grandparents. I was immersed in the Bible from early on. The personal acceptance came one summer at church camp.
What is your favorite sports team?
Why the UCF Golden Knights of course!!
