"Summerize"
Your Pets
By Dr. Edwin Cuevas, DVM
Summer
is approaching and whatever your plans are, they should include
preparations for your pets' health and welfare.
Car
Travel
· When traveling, keep your pet restrained by using
a pet seat belt or keeping your pet in a carrier.
· Provide water, but restrict food before travel to
prevent car sickness.
· Stop at regular intervals to allow your pet to relieve
itself.
· NEVER leave your pet unattended in your car- this
can lead to heatstroke. An animal's body temperature rises
quickly in a car without adequate ventilation.
General
Pet Care
· Provide access to shade and water if your pet is
left in the yard.
· Check to make sure that all vaccinations are current.
Heartworm, flea, and tick prevention should be given monthly.
· Do not feed your dog chocolate or grapes, as these
can be poisonous to your pet.
· Regular dental care prevents tartar buildup and periodontal
disease. It also helps to keep the heart healthy.
· Spay or neuter your pet. This is a general health
benefit to your pet and also reduces the chances that your
pet will roam.
